Each filigree, lace-like cane is composed of groups of glass rods that involve a process of fusing, layering pulling and twisting the glass. This process is done personally by Virginia and her husband Tony Toccalino at the furnace while working in their glass studio. The ribbon glass Holiday Canes are selected pieces of flattened colored glass embedded in the crystal, pulled and twisted to create swirling glass ribbons within.

These are our larger  Glass Candy Canes which are 16.8 cm tall x 3.5 cm wide and .8 cm in diameter.

Colors and dimensions may vary slightly. Thank you for supporting handmade in Canada items! The Candy Canes come as a gift boxed set of 3 with an artists’ card.

Virginia and Tony create these Handblown Filigree/Ribbon Large Glass Candy Canes at their glassblowing studio in Halton Hills On.

They use Ancient glass making techniques invented in Murano Italy by glass masters in 1526. This is an elaborate technique and very time consuming to perform. Filigree glass was rare. This resulted in it being  suitable for only the uppermost tables of society.  This elaborate form of Filigrana Glass is responsible for the fame of Murano style glass today

The Candy Cane has had a long history beginning approximately 1670. Hard sugar sticks were bent into a Shepherds Staff shape and handed out to children attending holiday services. Around 1900 a Candy maker in Indiana added Green, Red and White stripes to represent Hope, Love and Purity. This gave the Candy Cane its familiar markings.

In modern times the Candy Cane continues to change its stripes and colors. This delights old and young alike as the colorful canes carry the constant message of the Good Shepherd.

Patterns and colors are combined in these Filigrana Glass Candy Canes to be virtually limitless. This brings much appreciation and joy to collectors of the beloved Filigree Glass technique.

Virginia is a huge admirer of the Venetian Filigree and Ribbon Glass Rods. She always believed that they were beautiful enough to stand alone as ornaments. Today she brings you lovely Filigree/Ribbon Large Glass Candy Canes. These Candy Canes will be welcome addition to any ornament collection.
